Episode 56
Which Microphone Type to Use for Your Livestream
Are you using the right type of microphone when you are live streaming? There are different types of microphones and depending on the sound that you are going for, you will want to be sure you pick the right one.
On this episode, Christian Karasiewicz and Jim Fuhs dive in on helping you determine which microphone type to use when you go live.
- Internal Microphones
- Built into computers and mobile devices, usually have limited capabilities
- Lapel Microphones (Lavalier mic)
- Great for use with mobile devices, tripod with cameras
- Clip-on to your person.
- Types of lapel microphones: Power Dewise, Rode Wireless Go II, Rode Smartlav+, BOYA by M1
- Cardioid Microphones
- Cardioid microphones isolate unwanted ambient sound, as well as any other unwanted sounds from the back of the microphone. Such microphones are the most common choice for live streaming, as they block the surrounding noise, for instance, from a loud fan or the clatter of your mechanical keyboard.
- Often need a booster or cloudlifter
- Types of cardioid microphones: Shure SM7B,
- Dynamic Microphones
- Dynamic mics work best to record loud sounds. Unlike condensers, they use a wire coil inside the microphone to amplify signal picked up by the diaphragm. The output is considerably lower than a condenser, which is appropriate when the signal you're capturing is already very strong.
- Types of dynamic microphones: Samson Q2U USB / XLR Microphone, Shure MV7, ATR-2100
- Condenser microphones
- Condenser mics are delicate and are used to pick up and amplify more delicate sounds. Condensers use phantom power, or power from an external source (usually 48V sent from the preamp) to create their characteristically high output.
- Types of condenser microphones: Blue Yeti, Audio Technica AT2020
